Peruvian food became very popular in the world recently. In the famous The World’s 50 Best Restaurants ranking, Peru is one of the three countries got 2 places out of the top 10 restaurants. What surprised me is that even street food is very delicious, not to mention so many fruits and vegetables I have never seen in Taiwan and United States. This blog is to share some food I enjoyed or found interesting when living in Peru!

祕魯菜這幾年變得非常流行。在知名的世界最佳 50 間餐廳中,祕魯是在前十強中取得兩個名次的三個國家之一。讓我驚訝的是,連路邊攤都很好吃,更不提那些在台灣或美國從沒見過的蔬菜水果!這篇文章希望跟大家分享,當時住在祕魯時,我喜歡或覺得有趣的祕魯菜。

1. Restaurants一般餐廳

Chupe de camarones – shrimp (or can be fish) soup with corn and rice【河蝦濃湯,也可能是魚湯,通常還會加玉米和飯粒

Sopa criolla – angel hair paste in beef creamy soup with a sunny-side-up egg! 【天使麵牛肉湯,還加一顆荷包蛋

Ceviche – raw fish, boiled and fried corns, sweet potato and onion in lemon sauce. Peruvians call the sauce tiger milk and directly drink it afterwards. 【生魚片、煮玉米和炸玉米、番薯、洋蔥和檸檬汁。祕魯人稱剩下的檸檬汁「老虎奶」,會在吃完後直接喝掉。

2. Street food 路邊攤

Papa con huevo – potato with egg. Be careful that the sauce is very spicy, but very good! 【馬鈴薯和水煮蛋,小心醬料很辣、但很好吃

Salchipapas – fries and sausage slices. Just okay if you don’t like not crispy fries that much. 【薯條加香腸,如果你不是很喜歡不脆的薯條,那就真的還好

Bembos – a local fast food chain who survived under the pressure from international big fast food chains! Try the burgers with plantain and crispy fries inside! 【Bembos為在國際大品牌的夾殺下存活的在地速食品牌,試試看夾著香蕉與脆薯條的漢堡吧

3. Desserts 甜點

Churros – another all time favorite! Fried sweet dough tastes like the chewy version of donuts 【炸甜麵糰,吃起來像Q 版的甜甜圈

Helado de queso – sweet cheese flavor ice cream (feel more like sorbet), and it’s a specialty in Arequipa! 【甜起司冰淇淋,吃起來比較像剉冰,是阿雷基帕的當地特色!

King kong – super sweet cookie with sweet jam or condensed milk (blancmange?) inside, too sweet from me… 【夾心餅,裡面有甜果醬或牛奶糖醬,對我來講太甜了

Tres leches – the literal translation is three milks, and it’s a sponge cake soaked in various format of milk. Also too sweet for me…【三奶蛋糕,就是把海綿蛋糕浸在不同類型的牛奶裡,太甜了不喜歡

Empanada – crunchy breakfast bread for ancient Incan people in Cusco. Be aware that empanada in other places mean a different thing! 【古印加人的脆麵包早餐,這個在庫斯科有看到。請注意 empanada 在其他地方是指稱另外一種東西!

4. Beverage and drinks 飲品

Quinoa – my all time favorite option for breakfast! 【藜麥粥,最喜歡的早餐選擇之一!

Pisco – Peruvian liquor. Pisco sour is with lemon and egg white; maracuya sour is with passion fruit; algarrobina is with a kind of sweet syrup from a local tree. 【皮斯科酒,pisco sour 是加檸檬和蛋白,maracuya sour 是加百香果,algarrobina 則是加一種源自當地樹木的糖漿

 Inca cola – the soda drink beat Coca Cola, leading to that Coca Cola eventually bought it 【印加可樂,打敗可口可樂的當地汽水,雖然最後被可口可樂買下來了

5. World Top 50 RestaurantsIn general, Peruvian restaurants and street food are very delicious and affordable, so I won’t say that visiting these top restaurants is necessary. However, if you are interested, here are my personal opinions on them.

全世界最佳的50間餐廳總體而言,祕魯的餐廳和路邊攤都很好吃又不貴,所以不一定要拜訪這些高級餐廳。但如果你仍然有興趣,以下是我的一些想法。

Maido – perfect combination of Peruvian ingredients and Japanese cuisine with some fusion of Chinese flavor. Not as inspiring and representative as Central, but surely delicious. 【祕魯食材與日式料理的完美結合,有時還會帶點中式風味。沒像Central一樣具啟發性與代表性,但真的好好吃!

Central – unique ingredients from different places in Peru. The dining experience is like traveling around Peru with the chef to explore local species. Not all delicious, but definitely surprising. The mini tasting menu in the bar area has only 8-course and is highly recommended if you have budge constraint! 【用心上山下海尋找秘魯特殊食材,用餐就像跟大廚在秘魯旅行、探索當地特有種。不一定美味,但絕對驚艷。如果有預算限制,推薦你預約吧台區專有的八道菜 mini tasting menu

Astrid & Gaston – relatively traditional Peruvian food with some little innovation, and feels like the most famous one in Peruvian friends’ mind. But for me, I would say you can skip this if you have limited time or budget. 【相對傳統的祕魯料理再加上一些小創新,應該是我祕魯朋友們心中最有名的一間。但如果時間或預算不足,我反而建議可以跳過。

6. Others 其他
